Woohhooo l had to make a phone call to the emergency clinic yesterday to sort some dates out. The receptionist told me a rep had been in with my prize and she (receptionist)was guarding it till she was able to give it to the head nurse. I was confused as to what l had entered or won. Every so often l enter the odd competition and use the practice details as locums do not seem to exist to drugs company's. As l do not expect to win l then ignore possible results, working on the theory l never win.
A bit later on the HN rang back to sort dates and open the envelope while l was on the phone. I was gobsmacked when she told me l had won £200 of improve cpd vouchers to be used as l wanted whenever. I had won the competition on marbocyl medicated shampoo. I remember l entered that as l was bored one day.
I was having a look at Improve site today. There is a couple that caught my eye. anaesthesia and exotics and pain management but as they are not till next year l have time to decide and there is new course's all the time. I am interested in the wounds talk they do as well the HN is one of the tutors, brilliant at wound treatments l have learnt a lot over the years from her still more to learn though.

I Won
Well have to say had a really good day. It was all about cats today and renal failure all morning then urinary tract disease all afternoon. Hills arranged the roadshow and had some new info coming out from a group called IRIS They have some good links if your dog or cat has renal failure.
Course notes are top notch full colour and in a thick book. All to often if you get notes you just get a few photo copied pages.
I met several people l knew which always cheers the day up being able to catch up on gossip from the different practices. K asked if l was not taking my shoes to lunch, l assured her l was and pointed at my bag where they were hiding. She shook her head in despair. Lovely lass she does a fantastic impression of a drunken sheep, all she says is Baaaaaa and everyone falls over laughing. K has a fantastic temperament and is always happy and looks slightly insane. You know the big yellow happy faces well put a slight buck tooth there and l swear she was their model.
We had croissants and coffee on arrival and ermm l had 4 croissants. Mid morning had doughnuts cut in half so l didn't get to greedy just 1/2 and loaded the sliced fruit they had out... grapes, kiwi fruit and strawberry's.
Lunch was a choice so l had lasagne, chips then buffet and as l was at the back of the line everyone had only taken a bit to make sure there was enough left, there was tons. So l pigged on smoked salmon, roast beef, mayonnaise spuds, bit of salad popadum and pickled gherkins. Desert was cheesecake and thick cream.
Mid afternoon was a thick flapjack but l only managed a nibble. I over did lunch and the sweets on the table that l nibbled on during the talk. Well they left them out for us and l raided the sweetie bowl on our table post talk, so have a big horde of humbugs at home.
I rang hub to say l was on the way and never thought to mention l had eaten. I got back to a big dinner. When l said l had eaten he made me feel so guilty l ate dinner and have spent the evening sucking antacids and feeling ill.
The best part of the day was that l won the first name out the hat, l never win all l could say was "That's me it can't be me, l mean you made a mistake wow me"!!!.
It was a book from Cat Professional on Lower Urinary Tract Disease. Given the amount that we deal with at the emergency clinic it is a very useful book.
The great thing about this site is aimed at owners and professionals that the publications are downloadable if you live overseas. They also have several free articles which look good.

Greens and CPD
I understand that the reason the green party did not get more votes in the election just held was discovered.....................................
The voters kept putting their ballot papers into the recycle bin!
And on that note l am off for a day CPD on offer from Hills pet food on "Renal failure in cats" or something like that l have an idea it is also about "FUS" (cats with blocked bladders).
I finally get to meet one of the nurses off the big vetnurse site, we have spoken to each other on various occasions but never met, only about 400 other regulars off the site to meet.
I shall scandalise the local yokels as l will be barefoot, l find that comfier. Shall shove my shoes into my handbag in case l need them although am not sure why l would in the hotel?

Buffet's and Extreme Sheep
I was not due to work last night but was called in when the shift l was asked to cover was about to start, nothing like forewarning and forward planning.
Anyhow it was a lucky call, we had a great buffet at work last night. There had been a CPD night booked that was cancelled. For some reason best known to those that matter, rather than the mere workers the buffet was still delivered. It was like putting food out for starving locusts the way the night shift descended on it.
Lots and lots of food including, mini pizzas, sausages and pickled onions on sticks, mini samosas, mini spring rolls, tons of different sandwiches, chunky chips, quiche, mixed wraps, salad, sausage rolls (mini), pork pies.
*====*====*====*====*====*====*====*====*====*====*====*====*
My ytube insert is over running l have worked out how to make it smaller, but on my computer it is buffering up black. If you get a blank look when you click "run" leave it it is buffering just nothing showing. Please let me know if you have problems. Here is the URL Extreme Sheep Herding

Meet the rcvs Day
I spent yesterday in London on a Meet the rcvs day. I learnt a lot about what rcvs (royal college of veterinary surgeons) do and had a nice lunch. I do not know if it is good or bad that I was not what Jill (president of the rcvs) was expecting. I said “what you expected me more gobby and less tatty”, Jill just grinned.
I swear us Africans are coming out the woodwork. The waiter at rcvs was a shy lad and was from my home town of Bulawayo. There was a lady from SA on the bus.
I really do not like London, it is dirty and has no dustbins, l am not a bomber l wanted to dispose of rubbish. London is costly, my 92p dr pepper from the north was in London 1.59 l managed to get one for 1.39.
The statues and artwork are amazing and while the buildings have some wonderful architecture and carvings in stone and bronze they have a cold feeling heart. It is like all those years of scheming inside have stained their souls. I was looking at the church commissioners building opposite parliament when this thought struck me about the difference between their shells and souls. Having said that l do not like cities in general.
The South African lady on the bus told me where to jump off as she was getting off at the same stop. She was a chartered accountant over at the Dept. of transport. Just about opposite the rcvs, as you can guess we chatted about the state of Africa.
I was in London very early and went for a walk along to the houses of parliament in the sun which was nice. I was toying, till l saw the que, of mooching about inside Westminster abbey.
I went instead into Lady Margaret church next to it, a lovely little gem that only a few people were in. The plaques were fascinating with their stories of the long gone and olde writing.
One small statue vignettes on the wall fascinated me. It is in memory of someone but the man kneeling on a cushion has had his legs, arm and head off. The woman facing him and 2 children behind her are perfect. I do not know who it is of he was not mentioned, l assumed the woman was a queen but do not know. Everywhere else even damaged work was not overly damaged. Yet this seemed very deliberate, unfortunately no one was around to ask about it. If anyone knows l would love to hear the reason.
At the rcvs we were split into 2 small groups. l asked a lot of questions, every time the comment any questions popped up... everyone's eyes swivelled towards me. I got the impression that several people were on tender hooks for me to start a blazing row. Actually l see no point in doing that. Some questions were answered in general conversations other answers were incomplete due to time but at least in part were answered, even though it did open others unasked. It is up to me to decide if l really care enough at the moment to know the answers or leave it till such a time as l decide l want to know.
At one point the other group marched off to the waterproof basement (rcvs seem very proud of the waterproof basement, it was mentioned a lot) apparently the person showing them round is desperate to find out the history of a flag that rcvs store down there. I asked Jill why they had not taken a photo of the flag and sent it to the museums. They have enough to cover every subject in London. I got such a look of total astonishment l thought l had grown an extra head and had to feel for it. Apparently no one had thought of such a simple solution.
l have a better idea of what rcvs did and didn’t do which was a good starting point as like 99% of veterinary staff l had no idea and what l thought was about 90% wrong.
rcvs do the following:
1) Sort curriculum for vet and vn education and see that whoever supplies it stays suitable and current as do those practising.
2) Information storage and grants for veterinary research and other projects education travel etc.
3) Talk with the politicians etc over various animal related issues –although not convinced they seem to do any good again answers were vague, l kept being told to read the literature and no hard facts were given to my questions, l was not impressed.
4) Disciplinary if it brought the profession into public disrepute – The example given was, if a vet stole another persons spouse that didn’t matter.(except to the other spouse) If someone lied about work they had done that did.
5) Fees for registration to practice which are meant to help with the various things they do 1-4 above.
6) bvna are there to support nurses and bva to support vets, rcvs is the paperwork wagon that rolls along in between.
On the 2 veterinary registers - this is people legally able to call themselves and practice veterinary work: there are 8232 qualified vet nurses and 23445 vet surgeons in the UK
On the trip home there was some shrill voiced possibly arab female (l never looked even when getting off the phone my head ached to much to care) on the phone behind me she talked non stop for over 2 hours and when l got off the train at my stop she was still shrieking down the phone in a godawful monotone shrill. ... Ahh well at least l had a lovely lunch and an informative day.

I missed the programme last night on vet's but have been reading about it, as usual the tv did not give an honest balanced view. I understand that vet staff are having a hard time today due to this. Animals in need of tests are being refused the tests by the owners as they say vets are ripping them off. As animals can not talk the basic blood tests are invaluable to diagnosis and treatment.
Tempers are frayed when they are told that a prescription will cost x and need regular check ups every few months by the vet.
Thank goodness l am off for a few days hopefully by then things will have died down.

Days Off and Cat's
I have had a funny few days. In theory l have been off but chasing round trying to choose a phone at different 02 shops. And l can not say l am impressed with their business section we have had several months of being messed about. We are now getting a second reimbursement due to being overcharged, hopefully now solved.
I did not think l was that bad when l got a little bit angry with them on the phone, in the 02 shop yesterday. I told the shop assistant lass next time l would get really angry she went pale. I said l had surely not been that scary and she just gulped, guess l was scary?
Then there has been the garden doing some trimming and want to attack that again today, housework. And finally trying to sort my Mum's computer. It has been running so slow you fall asleep waiting for it to do anything. I think it must be because she only has 480 RAM (or something around mid 400 anyhow) l have defragged, run anti virus/spyware scan and an AOL computer check, and also emptied all the temp files and unused stuff l could find. So if anyone else out there has any ideas on why it would run slow l am open to ideas.
Then topped of with a CPD night last night on "Cat Behaviour" that was very good and held at Chestergates Referral Hospital near Chester. They have a full set up of specialists including MRI and are a very good practice. (but no stand alone website!)
I would like to do more on behaviour for animals but l do not have the money or time to do a proper course which lasts for about 2 or 3 years. And to be honest it is such a complex subject it should be done properly or not at all.
I will give basic advice but anything more involved l send people to proper animal behaviourists. Either or APBT or COAPE or the degree from Southampton University (not sure of it's degree name though).
There is to many people dabbling in it and giving out wrong advice. I have dealt with some really scary behaviour advice from owners that they have been given by so called experts. Just because someone trains dogs or has done a short course they are to my mind not behaviourists. The Cesar Millan The Dog Whisperer type are few and far between.
So as l have been so slack of late l decided to put up some humour and the type of advice a mother cat may pass onto her kittens either that or it is genetic behaviour?
1. If you have to throw up, get into a chair quickly. If you cannot manage this in time, get to an Oriental rug. Shag is good.
2. Determine quickly which guest hates cats. Sit on that lap during the evening. He won't dare push you off and will even call you "nice kitty." If you can arrange to have cat food on your breath, so much the better.
3. For sitting on laps or rubbing against trouser legs, select colours that contrast your own.
4. Always accompany guests to the bathroom. It is not necessary to do anything. Just sit and stare.
5. For guests that say "I love kitties," be ready with aloof disdain, claws applied to stockings, or a quick nip on the ankles.
6. Do not allow closed doors in any room. To get one open, stand on hind legs and hammer doorknob with forepaws. Once the door is opened for you, it is not necessary to use it. You can change your mind. When you have ordered an outside door opened, stand half in and half out and think about several things. This is important during very cold weather or mosquito season.
7. If one person is busy and the other is idle, sit with the busy one. For book readers, get in close under the chin, unless you can lie across the book itself.
8. For ladies knitting, curl quietly into lap and pretend to doze. Then reach out and slap knitting needles sharply. This is what she calls a dropped stitch. She will try to distract you. Ignore it.
9. For people doing homework, sit on the paper being worked on. After being removed the second time, push anything movable off the table (pens, pencils, stamps) one at a time.
10. Get enough sleep during the day. Sleep can not interfere with night time activities!
And finally Simons Cat.

Blog Photo Question
Just got in from a CPD on analgesia excellent meal, brilliant speaker. I drove past the Holiday Inn 6 times as the flyer sent out to the practice from the company doing the talk that it was at the Marriot hotel. In the end l went into Holiday Inn to be told ohh.. no we bought out Marriot hotel 2 years ago.
I took pages of notes, rare for me but this was to well put and memorable not to take notes, asked a lot of questions, not rare for me, and will be bending a lot of vets ears over what we have been told tonight.
Having a quick coffee before bed, l logged on to have a quick mooch as no TV.
Does anyone else have problems with photos in their blogs? I keep loosing them and having to reupload. It is driving me nuts, any help appreciated!.
On that note l need to go fall asleep, my eyes are open with matchsticks.

Forked Tongues and Buffets
I am up suffering indigestion. One of the drug companies held a CPD meeting at our place and had a pre talk buffet, most of the food was uneaten. Bliss for those of us on late shift we get the left overs. Trouble was l did my usual and overate and am now waiting for the antacids to kick in, so thought l may as well do something constructive and write.
Heart cat went home today with enough pills to keep him rattling.
The Siamese is out of the incubator it was needed for other patients. As his red blood cell count is rising, his temper is shortening.
He has won the battle of the litter tray, knew he would. We just keep piling the washing up. He and l have got on fine all day. True l have not needed to inject him that helped, and early evening we had a lovely chat and cuddle.
Tonight on change over l was explaining this to the night nurse while my fingers were resting through the kennel door on his bed.
Next thing l have 2 holes in my hand and am swapping glares at the cat who is looking arrogantly at me and the night nurse who is creased up laughing.
We had an op tonight on a cat that somehow bit his tongue and had a lovely fork in it. He had not eaten since yesterday so it needed a fix. A quick GA some suture material and surgical glue and the vet had made it almost as good as new. It is a bit crinkled and a piece had to be trimmed but hey, beggars can not be choosers and at least his good looks are not affected. By the time l left tonight his stomach was enjoying the return of food as sloppy AD (mushy convalescent food) slid down it.
The RTA dog is doing well. She had her femur repaired yesterday, the one side of her pelvis done today. The other side of the pelvis the vet will see how she does, it may be possible to get it settled with strict cage rest and no 3rd op.
The diabetic dog is still not settling on her glucose, it is swinging all over and things do not look good. She has other health problems that complicate it but the vets may win yet and get her home. Poor lass it is understandable why she is fed up of us with having to get so many drops of blood. It is yet another needle hole and to do that we have to muzzle her and she hates muzzles.
We have 2 sad strays in, neither are microchipped. We all had our usual snarl about "wish that people would microchip their pets and make sure that they have lodged the details. And if any of their phone numbers or addresses change they notify the chip company".
There is one thing worse than an animal that doesn't have a microchip, one that does and the details are out of date and we can not reunite the family.
One stray is an old dog, blind, senile and confused. He circles the walk-in kennel banging into walls and occasionally ramming the door when the rattle tells him it is not solid like the walls. We tried him in a small kennel but he became even more stressed in that.
He has eaten but not drunk just tripped over the water bowl and squelched through it. So he will be fed food mixed with water, to get round the drinking problem.
Trying to calm him doesn't work, we may as well not exist, and if we try and restrain him he gets snappy and even more distressed. Tonight we sedated him to settle him down and allow him some sleep.
The other stray is a lovely cat who has been in an RTA. She has a severely fractured pelvis, a fractured hock and deglove injury. She has eaten a bit and is heavily dosed with pain killers and antibiotics.
Both are in as short stay, end of days. If they are not claimed within a few days they will be put down on humane grounds.
With stray patients such as these it is veterinary discretion some are put to sleep immediately on humane grounds, others will stay a few days like these two but unless owners come forward they will be put down on humane grounds.
If they are not to badly injured and are young enough to rehome then they are "repaired" generally through the inhouse stray fund and either CPL or one of the rescue groups take them on.
Even if owners came forward they would probably be put down by the owners. The cat due to severity of the injuries and cost of repair. The dog because there is lots of puppies out there and it is senile. Yes it is a harsh judgement on my part but it is the reality of the situation.
